Solicitation Guidelines Board Discussion
What is a solicitor? A member of Larkin Street’s Board or Management team who is responsible for cultivating a specific donor relationship.
Why a Solicitor? We want to foster development of donor relationships and coordinate development efforts. Everyone can talk about Larkin Street and cultivate at any time.
Who gets a solicitor? • Existing significant donor relationships • Key sponsors for events • Targets for cultivation These can be corporations, individuals, and/or foundations. Solicitor assignments are based on: • Donor’s current giving level • Knowledge of potential capacity • Personal relationships with Board members, Honorary Board members, or staff.
What does the solicitor do? • Coordinates company/person's involvement with Larkin Street. • Knows about and is apprised of activity—meetings, volunteer work, etc. Everyone can talk about Larkin Street and cultivate at any time... • It's the big steps (asks, proposals, etc.) where we need to check with each other. • The Originator is tracked, too, and solicitor apprises originator of activity and developments
Solicitor Responsibilities • Know who the key players are (family for individual, staff for foundation, management for corporate) • Know what’s been done in the past. • Know what’s going on with the entity—what are they doing with Larkin Street, what do they want to do with Larkin Street, what is our best guess about their capacity for support? • Solicitor changes over time, as the relationship changes and as Board membership changes.
Next Steps • The Development Committee “wish list”: to identify avenues for relationships. Please add your notes. These are-- • Individuals who have consistently given more the $1,000 and others of interest • Corporations we want to get to know • Foundations that should know us • Key corporate donors and their solicitors—on the intranet and shared here. • Remember to tell Kathie your choices for your 2-3 targets from your personal solicitation list..
