  1. Politics and War By: Brittani Carroll

  2. how the government promotes war -messages -propaganda -governmental techniques

  3. Comic • Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson • Stereotyping/generalizations exist between the sides (“Fearless American defender… loathsome Communist Oppressor.”) • Technique is used by governments/government officials commonly to promote war

  4. Shepard Fairey’sFull Metal Jacket

  5. Art: Full Metal Jacket • Contradictions between soldier and peace symbols – war can be claimed to be necessary to achieve peace. • Governments can use this claim to motivate people to fight.

  6. Book: The Hunger Games • Examining: setting and beginning of story • The Capitol promotes conflict between the districts by forcing their children to fight in the Hunger Games. • They make the Hunger Games appear more like a gameshow / reality TV show / festivity. • distracts people from the reality of the Hunger Games. It can stop people from fighting against the government, and also get people to want to volunteer and support it. • Civilians of the Capitol who aren’t directly involved can be blinded from reality. • Others can too, with the promise of fame and food for the winner. • Sometimes children in districts volunteer for the games solely due to wanting fame and the rewards, and some have trained to achieve it (ex: Cato)

  7. Book: The Hunger Games • Connection to real life: The government can choose to portray conflict in a way that promotes it, therefore hiding the negative affects and the reality of the conflict. • In wars, they may choose to show the war in a positive/glorified light in order to distract people from seeing the reality, and that their soldiers are being sent to die in battle.

  8. Music Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zcps2fJKuAI “This Is War” by 30 Seconds to Mars

  9. Music Video: This is War • labeling politicians/government officials under “the moment of truth,” “the moment to lie” • Civilians are labeled as the victims. • Means that government officials and politicians have control over the info that is given to civilians about the wars. • If officials lie about war, it would be difficult for civilians to know unless it is exposed somehow. • Government officials have the power to use information and possibly even manipulate it. They can use it to promote war to their own benefits or for the country’s benefits.

  10. Conclusion The works of art have shown us that the government can promote war, as well as different ways they can do so. Government can promote war through: • Stereotyping/generalizations of rival countries • Claims and promises, such as the need to fight for peace • Trying to present the war in a positive light to avoid the harsh reality. • Manipulation of information given to civilians in order to get a desired reaction.
