All About Me • My background • I grew up in Belleville, KS • I attended Kansas State University • In May 2009 I earned my master’s degree in education from Baker University • I have been married four years. We have a 10 month old daughter. • My experience • This is my fifth year at Rising Star • I have taught first grade each year here

  4. My Goals • To give your child the academic and social skills they need to progress to second grade. • To provide a supportive and safe classroom environment. • To individualize and differentiate instruction and learning.

  5. Classroom Community Classroom Rights and Responsibilities Positive Reinforcement- Starbucks, Quality Board, Compliment stones BIST-Behavior Intervention Support Team

  6. BIST • Research-based behavior management program • Students and adults partner to make a plan to manage behavior • Positive change and create healthy environments

  7. BIST- 3 Life Skills • I can take good care of myself, even if I am mad! • I can be productive and follow directions even if I don’t want to. • I can be okay, even when others aren’t okay.

  9. Tardiness • School starts at 8:10. • If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the bell rings, you will be sent back to the office to check in. • We start our day immediately so please try to be at school on time!

  10. Birthday Treats • Please try to give me 24 hour notice before you plan to send treats • Individual treats are best or precut • No freezer or refrigerator available

  11. Field Trips We will have lots of fun field trips this year! • Weston Red Barn Farm -Fri. Sept. 24th • American Royal Invitational Youth Rodeo- Kemper Arena -Tues. Oct. 26th

  12. Math • enVision Math • Daily Mixed Drill • Weekly Computation Review • MAPS + -Super Six -Power Drill • Math fact practice • Calendar • Daily Warm Ups

  13. Science • Harcourt Science program • Hands-on activities • In Science the first grade units are: (A) Plants and Animals All Around (B) Living Together (C) About Our Earth (D) Weather, Sky and Seasons

  14. Social Studies • Houghton Mifflin • In Social Studies the first grade units are: (1) People Everywhere (2) Where We Live (3) World of Work (4) Everything Changes (5) Good Citizens

  15. Language Arts • Open Court Reading • Sound/Spelling cards • Big Book, decodable books, anthologies • Comprehension and vocabulary tests for stories in anthologies • DIBELS three times per year • DIBELS progress monitoring when needed • Workshop

  16. Writing • Integrated through all subjects • Letter formation • Capital/lowercase letters • Punctuation • Inventive spelling (“best guest spelling”) • Journal writing

  17. Spelling • Everyday Spelling program • Tests are on Fridays • Send home new list on Mondays with homework; practice test on homework • Enrichment-Alternate list

  18. Homework • Homework is sent home on Mondays for the week and is due back that Friday. • Complete spelling pretest by Thursday • For every 10 minutes of reading color in a star (silent or aloud). Parents please initial each star to show your child did the reading. • Have all parts of homework stapled or paper-clipped together when handed in. • Homework will start the week of Sept. 13th.
