  7. HISTORY

  8. The origin of Catalonia is “la Marca Hispànica”, a territory made by Charlemagne to save himself from the Muslims. In the Xth century it became independent from the French King Charlemagne.

  9. Catalonia joined Aragó and made an empire by the Mediterranean sea in the XIVth and XVth centuries.

  10. In 1479 the king of Aragó married the queen of Castella. This is the “origin of Spain” but Catalonia kept its institutions, language and culture. From 1500 to 1700 the Habsburg’s dynasty reigned in Spain. Then, Catalonia lost the territories in the North-Pyrenees.

  11. In 1700, King Habsburg died without descendants. Catalonia preferred the Habsburg’s dynasty because they respected the Catalan rights, but the Borbon’s dynasty won. The defeat was on 11th September 1714, and this date is the national holiday of Catalonia. We celebrate we won’t give up, and we’ll overcome difficulties.

  12. The Borbon’s dynasty has reigned until today. • Exception: XX century  II Republic (arisement of Catalonia)  Coup  Civil war (1936 – 39)  Franco’s dictatorship (1939 – 75)  Franco abolished the Catalan institutions and chased the Catalan and their culture.

  13. With Franco’s death, Spain became a democracy and Catalonia, its culture, language and institutions were respected. WE ARE A NATION
