Henry Hudson 1565-1611 • Henry Hudson was an English explorer and navigator. • He was hired by the Dutch West India Company in 1609. He was in search of a shorter trade route to Asia.
Hudson left from the Netherlands in 1609 on a ship called the Half Moon. • He sailed up the Hudson River to what is now Albany. • He thought the deep Hudson River might be a passage through the continent.
Henry Hudson is famous for exploring three North American waterways which are now named after him: • Hudson River • Hudson Bay • Hudson Strait
Henry Hudson did not find Asia but claimed all the land along the Hudson River in New York for the Dutch.
Interesting Facts • Henry Hudson sailed with his son John. • In 1611, while exploring North America, Hudson’s crew mutinied or turned against him. They put him out to sea with several crew members in a small boat. They were never heard from again.
