  8. IBI-MFC: Products A complete Ocean Forecast Service Updated daily Forecast horizon: 5 days (HC01 + FC05) Based on NEMO model V3.2 (Nucleus for European Modeling of the Ocean) Spatial resolution: 1/36ᵒ (< 2 Km)  “Submesoscale permitting” application Products: only PHYS T, S, UCU, VCU, SSH… Hourly means (surface level) Daily means (3D fields in the entire water column)

  9. What’s behind IBI-MFC: System Description • IBI NEMO is a 3D baroclinic model that: • Solves Navier-Stockes equations in geopotential coordinates under hydrostatic and Boussinesq approximations. • Solves high-frequency shelf processes IBI NEMO application includes: • Horizontal Resolution: 1/36° (≈ 2 km) • Vertical Resolution: 50 z-coord levels • IBI Grid size 1093 x 1894 x 50 • = 1.035e08 grid points • Composite Bathymetry (LEGOS) • Sources:ETOPO 2 & GEBCO • Tidal forcing at OBC & tidal astronomic potential (11 harmonics from FES2004 and TPXO7.1 tidal models solutions) • High frequency Atmospheric forcing (3h atmospheric forcing from ECMWF Model) • Nesting into MyOcean GLOBAL system (Lateral Open Boundary Condition: MyO GLOBAL data (1/12º, daily) interpolated to the IBI grid (3D T, S, sea Level & velocities) • Daily update of river discharge inputs (River Flowrates sources for 33 rivers)

  15. A Robust System for a Reliable Operational Service • Main achievements are: • 2) Special attention to any factor causing potential recurrent • incidents  Plan of mitigation / correction measures Incident causes (since April 2011): MyOcean2 User training workshop. Exeter, July 2014.

  16. A Robust System for a Reliable Operational Service • IBI is a quite robust system • But sensitive to issues in the computing environment & acqusition of external input forcings • From April 2014. Back-up capability: reduction of impacts on users due to incidents in NOM PC • > 97% of the days, daily IBI forecast bulletin served without delay or problems. • Incidents more frequent outside working days MyOcean2 User training workshop. Exeter, July 2014.
