  1. LIFE SCIENCE NEW INITIATIVE(LSNI) Alberto Del Guerra Report to ADCOM, Las Vegas 30 July 2011

  2. RATIONALE • Advances in life sciences such as cell biology, genomics, and pharmacology, as well as society’s desire to improve health care, have led to a need for more of what IEEE has to offer: statistical methods, image analyses, diagnostic devices, and medical equipment standards, to name just a few contributions. They all involve electrical and computer engineering and computer science—areas in which IEEE has a wealth of experience. [from the new portal: http://lifesciences.ieee.org/ ]

  3. A threeyear project At the 20-21 February 2010 IEEE Meeting Series, the Board of Directors approved five priorities for 2011: • Ensure sustainable progress toward establishing IEEE’s leadership in important new technical areas (including the Smart Grid and selected areas within Life Sciences).

  4. Life Sciences New Initiative • Aimed at better coordinating all technical activities as currently distributed among various Societies/Councils, to promote the technical leadership of IEEE in Life Sciences and Engineering, which include bioengineering, biomedical engineering, healthcare technology, and applications of various technologies to life sciences and healthcare.
