  1. Energy and Power Technologies

  2. Energy and Power Technologies • Learning Standard • ENGR-EP-1. Students will utilize the ideas of energy, work, power, and force to explain how systems convert, control, transmit, and/or store energy and power

  3. Energy and Power Technologies • Concepts • List various forms of energy and power • Define energy and power • Identify a technological system • Discuss the importance of the study of energy and power • Explain various factors affecting technological system • Recognize the inputs of a technological system • Differentiate between the scientific method and the technological method of problem solving • Summarize the technological method of problem solving

  4. Energy and Power Technologies • Vocabulary

  5. Energy and Power Technologies • Energy • Energy is defined as the ability to do work

  6. Energy and Power Technologies • Energy • Forms of energy • Light • Heat • Mechanical • Chemical • Electrical • Nuclear

  7. Energy and Power Technologies • Energy Sources • Nonrenewable Energy • Fossil Fuels • Natural Gas • Coal • Petroleum • Nuclear Electric Power • Renewable Energy • Solar • Biomass • Geothermal • Hydroelectric • Wind

  8. Energy and Power Technologies • Energy Sources

  9. Energy and Power Technologies • Work • Work is the application of a force over a distance. Work is equal to the product of the force and the distance through which it produces movement W = Fd

  10. Energy and Power Technologies • Power • Power is defined as the rate at which work is performed or energy is expended P = ∆W/∆t

  11. Energy and Power Technologies • Power • Three major forms of power • Electrical Power • Mechanical Power • Fluid Power

  12. Energy and Power Technologies • Science vs. Technology • Science is the body of knowledge related to the natural world and its phenomena • Technology is the body of knowledge related to the human-made world. The technological world includes human-made products and their impacts to society and the environment

  13. Energy and Power Technologies • Science vs. Technology

  14. Energy and Power Technologies • Technological Systems • System involves a combination of related parts working together • Inputs of a system are the resources needed to begin the system • People • Capital • Knowledge • Material • Energy • Time • Finance

  15. Energy and Power Technologies • Technological Systems • Processes is the portion of technological systems that are changing the inputs to produce outputs (result). Processes must always be managed, in one way or another, by humans • Outputs are the end results of the technological system. The creation of an output can also cause the creation of undesirable outputs, which, must always be factored into the input of the technological system • Goals are the successful completion of a technological system • Societies put restrictions on technological systems through regulations

  16. Energy and Power Technologies • Technological Systems

  17. Energy and Power Technologies • Seven Major Technological Systems • Agricultural Technologies • Systems that produce outputs by growing plants and raising animals • Communication Technologies • Systems that are associated with the dissemination of information and ideas • Construction Technologies • Systems that associated with then creation of structures for residential, commercial, industrial, and civil use

  18. Energy and Power Technologies • Seven Major Technological Systems • Energy and Power Technologies • Systems that gather energy and convert it to useful power for the use and benefit of society • Manufacturing Technologies • Systems that transform raw materials into useful products • Medical Technologies • Systems that used to maintain health and treat injuries and illnesses

  19. Energy and Power Technologies • Seven Major Technological Systems • Transportation Technologies • Systems designed to move people and products from one place to another
