  1. HIFI Consortium Meeting March 2006 Thijs de Graauw

  2. Fourth Meeting with Delegations on Herschel/Planck Instrument flight model development • Instrument flight model delivery stabilization actions start are effective • Instrument flight model schedule trend are more stable • Still severe technical problems that affect Instrument availability • PACS FPU black paint • HIFI LSU • HFI 4 K cooler electronics • LFI late availability of detectors; gold flakes,.. • Earliest launch date compatible with late instrument delivery announced to be February 2008, but Planck instruments already at least one month later • Herschel instruments - September 2006 • Planck Instruments - June 2006

  3. Herschel Satellite Development - Issues Helium II tank - high heat load - Tiger team identified major part of sources - to be "repaired" - Further careful inspection of PFM Cryostat during deintegration - Implementation of corrective measures and retest up to to September 2006 • High straylight background in EQM test - Stray light significantly higher than predicted - Potential problem for FM - "similar" design - investigations ongoing - Potential use of CQM SPIRE in PFM after repair action for stray light verification by test • Herschel Telescope - focus position in cryo - Higher than expected focus shift (but stable) observed during cryo-optical test - Systematic causal analyses performed - point to CTE variations SiC and Invar/sample - Verification tests ongoing - Updated position by end March

  6. HIFI Schedule Development

  7. HIFI Critical Paths 1. LSU now on critical path; Expected delivery end of June, tbc. Blocks start of HIFI-ILT 2. LO S/S next one on critical path; Expected delivery 18 July, driven by LCU readiness. Could block start of HIFI ILT. 3. ICU is almost on critical path; Agreed delivery date 5 June. With later delivery it blocks start of HIFI-ILT 4. Cryo-Vibration Campaign to be completed before 10 July otherwise it eats precious ILT/calibration time with LO s/s 5. ILT (=test/characterisation/calibration) duration under investigation and ready for discussion at HIFI Science Verification Review (20-21 April)

  8. Schedule Milestone Updates • FPU: FM ready for FM#2 test serie: 10 March • FCU: FM ready for system integration: 14 April • HRS Delivery: 7 April • WBS Re-delivery: 15 March • ICU Delivery: 5 June • Up-converter delivery: 28 April • LSU Delivery: 30 June tbc • LO S/S delivery (with LSU-DM): 18 July Test Series • FM-2 period: 10 March-12 May • Cryo-vibration planned: 15 May – 23 June • FM-3 period: 23 June - 18 July • ILT period: 19 July - 9 October tbc at SVR (20-21 April)
