  1. Week of: February 24th – February 28th News to Know Rowdy Readers Tomorrow is the Holmes School Staff vs. Parents Basketball at Brooks Middle School. Doors open at 6:15 and the game starts at 7:00. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. I was suppose to play in the game, but unfortunately due to a sprained ankle, I am going to have to sit this one out …but GO STAFF!!! The second trimester ends next Wednesday, March 5th. However, report cards for the second trimester will not go home until Friday, March 21st. ISAT testing will take place at Holmes School next week. While this does not effect kindergarten, we still need to be fairly quiet in the school and especially in the hallways. Please remind your child of this. The Holmes School PTO “Hawktion” is next Saturday, March 8th at Wire in Berwyn. Invitations were recently sent home and you can send your RSVPs to school and I will drop them off in the office. STEM week is coming up. If your occupation is centered around science, technology, engineering or mathematics and you are interested in presenting something to a class at school, please contact me. • This week we started a new reading unit that focuses on weather and the seasons. With this new unit we focused on a couple great reading skills. We worked on recognizing and explaining the relationship between illustrations and the text, identifying different types of texts and identifying the author and illustrator and their role. The stories and poems that helped with these skills were: • A Rainy Day • Frog and Locust • Sledding • How Thunder and Lightning Came to be • Various “Where the Sidewalk End” poems • The Wind • Slip on Your Raincoat • Four Seasons • Rain on the Rooftop • We also added new sight words and vocabulary words this week. The new sight words were “this” and “do”. Our sight word list is now up to 25. The vocabulary words for the week were: weather, cloud, blustery, drizzle and chilly. Math Madness Upcoming Dates This week we worked on decomposing the number 10. We figured out the different combinations of two numbers that add together to make ten. We used “ten frames”, Unifix cubes, iPad applications and a game called “How Many are Hiding?” to find the different combinations. Ask your children about these activities and work on these combinations at home. • Saturday, March 1st: Staff vs. Parents Basketball • Wednesday, March 5th: End of 2nd trimester • Saturday, March 8th: PTO “Hawktion” at Wire • Week of March 17th: STEM Week • Week of March 17th: Spirit Week • Wednesday, March 19th: STEM Night • Friday, March 21st: Report cards go home Things we do at Holmes/Things to do at Home • Describe the relationship between illustrations and the text. • Ask and answer questions about a text. • Identify the difference between a poem, a fictional book and a nonfiction book. • Decompose the number 10. • The sounds that th, wh, sh and ch make. • Maintain focus for an extended period of time. • Learn from their mistakes.
