  2. What is Induction? Induction is a procedure used to stimulate uterine contractions during pregnancy before labor begins on its own. It is an artificial start to the birth process through medical intervention.
  3. Common Methods Stripping of Membranes Prostaglandin Cervix Ripening Pitocin Drip Breaking of water
  4. Possible Medical Reasons to Induce Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) Extended premature rupture of membranes with no contractions More than two weeks past accurate due date Diabetic mother with degenerating placenta Mother has multiple signs of Preeclampsia Mother has a chronic acute illness High Blood Pressure Kidney Disease Severe rH sensitivity
  5. Elective Reasons to Induce Picking the birthdate Mother is uncomfortable Doctor going on vacation Pressure from family and friends Control birth weight due to ultrasound scans
  6. Risks of Induction For the Mother Labor is on average longer Contractions are much stronger Risk of Uterine rupture doubles Natural Spontaneous Labor-0.7% Induced Medicated Labor-1.5% Increased Instance of Amniotic Embolism Increased rate of emergency Cesarean Delivery http://movies.netflix.com/WiPlayer?movieid=70075502&trkid=7852267
  7. Problems and Risks Cont. For the newborn: Reduced blood flow due to extended contractions. This causes an increase of cesarean deliveries due to fetal distress Increased risk of Meconium Aspiration High risk of premature birth due to inaccurate due date calculation.
  8. Conclusion If there is not a proven medical reason that labor needs to be induced early it is best for both the mother and the fetus to wait until labor starts spontaneously. Regardless of how uncomfortable Mom is or of any outside pressure.
