Pharmacology for Medical CareersPrepares for or Supplements Careers in Following Health Professions: Medical doctor Pharmacist Physician assistant Registered nurse Nurse practitioner Licensed Practical Nurse Certified Nursing Assistant Pharmacy technician Free programs and training are available to teachers.

Why take the Pharmacology for Medical Careers Program? • Teaches HSE students about pharmacy operations, identification of drugs, and prepares for technician jobs while still in high school. • Schools districts are seeking CTE programs leading to national certification and containing option for end-of course testing. • Provides a foundation of pharmacy operations and medications for all future medical careers. • PMC graduates can become employed parttime as nationally certified pharm techs while working their way through medical school. • Students completing a PMC program are ahead of their peers in postsecondary medical training.

Option for Pharmacy Technician Certification Remains!Duties: • Pharmacy Technicians: • Assist pharmacist with non-judgmental tasks; • Count, pour, weigh, measure, and label; • Master computer skills/keyboarding; • Practice customer service skills; • Use phone/communication skills. • Medications must be checked by pharmacist before dispensing to patient.

Program Structure • PassAssured programs are accredited through the Texas Pharmacy Association by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. • Self-paced instruction for high school seniors, or adults • Course can be completed in one or two semesters • Teacher facilitates; does not lecture • Allows high school or post-secondary graduation credit • Classroom options: * Class within a class * Independent study * Distance learning * Self contained

  8. West Virginia Pharmacy Technician Regulations • Register with WVBOP • Be a high school grad or equivalent • Attain the age of 18 • Present evidence of good moral character • Complete board approved PT training in a pharmacy taking 2080 hours in two years • Pay fee of $25.00

WV Option for Registering Pharmacy Technicians with National Certification • Achieve passing score on the PTCB or ExCPT exam • Serve 20 hours under supervision of pharmacist • Pay fee of $25.00 • Every two years, recertify with respective national certification agency by completing 20 credit hours

National Pharmacy Technician Certification Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) • http://www.ptcb.org • The PTCB Examination contains 90 questions in three job function areas. 80 questions are graded. • Requirements: • High school diploma or its equivalent • No felony conviction • The examination fee is $129.00

National Healthcareer AssociationExamination for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) • ExCPTExamination contains 110 questions in three job function areas. 100 questions are graded. Two hour exam. • Requirements: • High school diploma or GED • No felony conviction, or crime related to controlled substances • Examination fee: $105
