Objectives • Describe employer benefits of helping nursing mothers to continue to breastfeed when they return to work. • Discuss importance of continued breastfeeding to mothers and babies. • Describe methods to provide support and accommodations for breastfeeding employees. • Discuss the 4 minimum requirements for recognition as an Oklahoma Recognized Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite.

American Academy of Pediatrics Breastfeeding Position Statement Standards for infant and maternal health: • Exclusive breastfeeding (no formula, water or juice) for 6 months • Continued breastfeeding (with age-appropriate complementary foods) for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant 2 • months or longer American Academy of Pediatrics: Section on Breastfeeding.   12. No dedicated space for pumping? Other options: • Spare/borrowed office • Cubicle with a shower curtain rod & curtain • Supply room • Dressing room • Manager’s office • Privacy screen to partition off a corner of a larger room

Workplace Support • Mothers depend upon manager’s and co-workers’ support & flexibility to accommodate breaks for pumping (typically 2 or 3 15-minute breaks initially). • A written breastfeeding policy will support and standardize implementation, minimizing confusion and debate. See Resources slide for sample policies.

Staff Lactation Rooms on Oklahoma Health Center Campus • 2004: first room on campus at OUMC in the Lactation Center • 2010: 13 rooms on campus • 2011: Stephenson Oklahoma Cancer Center opens with a Lactation Room • Cancer prevention begins with breastfeeding! • 2013:  total of 22 rooms on campus including 6 in various College buildings • 2014: total of 25 rooms on campus including a double room at the VA Hospital

Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Minimum Criteria for Recognition Requirements • Flexible break times for expression of milk • Comfortable location to allow privacy for pumping (other than a toilet stall) • Access to a nearby clean water source to wash hands and pump parts • Written policy supporting breastfeeding

Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Gold Star Recognition Criteria Additional Options (Choose 3 or more of 6) • Access to a refrigerator for safe storage of milk • Prenatal breastfeeding education • Counseling by a lactation consultant as needed • Referrals to community resources for special situations
