The Analogy • It helps us use aptitudes and comprehensions from one scope of our experience, to give a new meaning to another life happening • Try to use images that are common to the client, or that respond to their preferred representational system
Using Anecdotes, Parables and Stories • Anecdotes: “I knew a person that”, “A client once told me”, “Once I saw” • Anecdotes help the client work through anxieties and fears, or tough and denied experiences • Stories: “There once was a cat…” Movies, etc. • Stories help clients reconnect with their emotions and to “break the Ice”.
I know of a family that... OrI have a friend that... • Analogies with other clients, people or experiences, can introduce to the individual or family theory a kind of “Group Therapy Effect”, in which Universalization ingrains hope and a new way of looking at things; besides removing the “These things only happen to me” myth.
Metaphor through action • Physical action is a powerful way for analogies and metaphors to benefit • The Psychodramatic Techniques is based on these principles
