A brief review • Development of the method at FST Weinheim • 2006 • Becoming acquainted with the method at the EWC seminar • Presentation to the employer • Drafting a shop floor agreement on health issues • 2007 • First prize at the “We all take Care” Award • Recognition of the method as best practice within the group • 2010 • Establishing a mapping coordination at the FST works council

A brief review • Scope of the projects • 28 projects at FST Weinheim • Currently we conduct about 8 projects every year • Different departments: • Production area: at the line, QS jobs • Areas close to production: logistics, construction, machine tooling • Administrative areas: accounting, purchasing, inside sales • Atypical areas: sales reps – home office • Decentralized areas: tool shop Laudenbach, warehouse Lorsch • Objective: • Blanket coverage mapping • Linking the different departments (learning from each other)

A brief review • Continuous improvement of the method • Greater emphasis on visualizing the results with photos • Before / after photos • Colleagues take the photographs on their own (more authentic) • Meetings with the colleagues on a regular basis • Scheduled: during employee group discussions • Unscheduled: mapping days 4 times a year • Improved documentation • External database for the mapping team – • status of the projects permanently visible • Colleagues are informed on updates

Advantages of the method • For the colleagues • Team building and understanding each other • Thinking as one group • Promoting communication within the team • Recognizing the employees as experts of their own cause • Continuous improvement in terms of occupational safety and workers‘ health • Employees are more accountable for their own and their colleagues‘ health and safety • Direct influence of their own working conditions

Advantages of the method • For the work of the works council • Continuous communication with the colleagues • Improved information by the colleagues on possible problems • Improved image of the works council, also in departments which did not have any contact with the works council so far (specifically white collar areas) • Successes based on mapping projects allow for a better perception of the works council among the workforce

Some examples from the real life • From the administrative area • Example 2: FAS (accounting) • Problem: permanent excessive stress of colleagues because of lack of manpower • Solution: creating five new permanent positions • Example 3: Simrit office work in Munich • Problem: awkward scanning process • Solution: every PC was equipped with a scan folder

  20. Outlook • Make use of parallels of different departments • Identify recurrent problems • Insufficient ventilation • Insufficient extraction at machines • Hard floors • Poor ergonomics • Increasing the pressure exerted on the employer

  21. Outlook • Integrate it into the company‘s safety process • Direct inclusion of the mapping results in the risk assessment • Note in the health data sheets • Change of office workplaces based on new findings
