  2. The numbers don’t lie • “Nearly 100 percent of college students and 92 percent of nonstudents in the 18-24 age range were Internet users. By comparison, only 75 percent of adults nationally report using the Internet” (Zou, 2011). • "Students inhabit a 21st century world for 18 hours a day," Tracy says. "And, all too often, educators put them in a 19th centuryclassroom for six hours of that day, and the students feel a tremendous disconnect. We have a responsibility to teach them the skills to optimize these tools” (Machielse, 2011) • “Media use among children and teenagers ages 8 to 18 has grown so fast that they on average spend twice as much time with screens each year as they spend in school” (Richtel, 2012).

  3. TechnologyDictionary Definitions • According to Webster’s College Dictionary (2010), “technology” is • “a technological process, invention, or method or the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization.” • According to Merriam-Webster (2014), “technology” is • “a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge”

  4. Think about your own definition of technology How has your definition or perception of technology changed over time? Discuss your thoughts with a partner. Find one thing your both agree on and one thing you disagree about.

  5. The numbers don’t lie • “The national survey of 1,000 students in Grades 6 through 8found that: • 39 percent use smartphones for homework. • 26 percent use smartphones at least weekly for homework. • 31 percent use tablets for homework” (Khadaroo, 2012) • “Roughly 75 percent of 2,462 teachers surveyed said that the Internet and search engines had a “mostly positive” impact on student research skills” (Richtel, 2012).

  6. TechnologYAccording to the national Center for educational statistics Technology in Schools: “The collection of electric and electronic devices, and related institutional and individual behaviors and practices, that are used in support of administrative and instructional applications in public and private educational settings in the United States” (NCES, 2003). Technology Resources: “The hardware, software, networks and networking capability, staff, dollars and context which together can be used in the implementation of a technology solution” (NCES, 2003).

  7. How do teachers really feel? • “90percent said that digital technologies were creating “an easily distracted generation with short attention spans.” • “685 teachers surveyed in the Common Sense project, 71 percent said they thought technology was hurting attention span “somewhat” or “a lot.” • “60 percent said it hindered students’ ability to write and communicate face to face, and almost half said it hurt critical thinking and their ability to do homework” (Richtel, 2012).
