  2. Standard #5: Application of ContentThe teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. • Brief Description: For this assignment, I did research on the contemporary educational issue of year-round schooling. I collaborated with a partner to research the different perspectives in on the topic. In addition, we made a list of pros and cons about year-round schooling. • Rationale To document my understanding of standard #5, Application of Content: • I listed the different perspectives of year-round schooling. • Came up with two questions for our audience, allowing us to creatively discuss our topic.

  3. What is year round schooling? • A modified schedule for teachers and students that involves attending school all year. • There are frequent 3-4 week breaks throughout the year. • School year ends with a 5 week summer break • School year has same amount of school days as a traditional school, just organized differently. This avoids any extended vacation time.

  4. Pros =) • Families that have a hard time finding child care will benefit • Supports continuous learning • This helps students detain the material and learn continuously. • Less time for kids to get in trouble • Students and teachers have less stress • Due to frequent breaks

  5. Pros =) • There are more afterschool activities offered throughout the year for students • Research has shown that other countries use this system successfully. • Gives families opportunity to take many small trips throughout the year, instead of one long trip once a year.

  6. Cons =( • Maintenance becomes more expensive • The two week breaks every 6 weeks can be disruptive • Easy for students to get distracted and not complete regular school work • Higher utility bills all throughout the year • Teens are not able to get summer jobs • Can’t help out family

  7. Cons =( • Summer camps would not be an option for kids • Kids missing out on camps related to what they enjoy • Example: science camps, cheerleading camps, overweight/exercise camps. • Family time is cut back since kids are always in school

  8. discussion ?s • How would kids feel if they did not have the option to go to summer camp? • How would having year round schooling benefit you and your family?
