Name of Artifact: Current Issues in Education Project Date: April 16, 2013 Course: Education 101 Brief Description: For this assignment, we evaluated Year-Round School. We found the pros and cons to year-round schooling. We also examined the history of year-round school. Rationale: To document our understanding for Standard #10, Leadership and Collaboration, we collaborated together to understand Year-Round school. We included the pros and cons to a balanced calendar.
History of Year-Round School • Offered for students to graduate earlier • Attempted summer school • Wasn’t popular in the great depression – cost to much money • In 1840 – school calendar changed to what we have today • Not having school in the summer prevented diseases
For Year Round School • Students will remember more because they won’t take a long break • Most other nations only have 7 weeks of vacation • Americans have up to 13 weeks of vacation • Low income families can’t afford summer programs
Against Year – Round School • Students lose the desire to learn if their isn’t a summer break • Need time to get their energy out • Studies show children need time away to rejuvenate
Teacher benefits • Teacher flexibility • One long break teachers get worn out by the time you get to the break - burnout
Other Facts • Statistics show that the U.S. is behind in education • Most countries do have year round schools • Easier for family vacations
