  1. RoamAbout Installation • Installation/Configuration of: • Network adapter card on a: • Windows 95 system • Windows NT 4.0 system • AccessPoint Manager • Client Utility

Wireless Network Adapter Installation • Installing a RoamAbout PC card requires the same level of knowledge required to install any standard Ethernet adapter card. • A basic understanding of the operating system which you are working with is necessary to ensure a smooth installation. • This overview will discuss installations on both Windows 95 and NT workstation 4.0 operating systems

  3. Installation on Windows 95 • Since Windows 95 is a plug- and-play compatible operating system, the wireless adapter installation is very simple • Ensure the PCMCIA slot is empty and put the wireless adapter into the empty slot

  4. The operating system should automatically discover the new adapter and prompt you to install the driver Select Next to continue with the installation Installation on Windows 95

  5. At this point select the Other Locations tab to install the driver from the disk provided Installation on Windows 95

Once the driver is loaded the RoamAbout 802.11 Settings window will open From here you can configure the settings: At the Basic tab you need to enter the Wireless network name for that network If you want the Ad-Hoc mode, you should select the appropriate option NIC ConfigurationWindows 95 Note: The Wireless Network Name has to be consistent with the rest of the network

  9. The Driver Type should already have defaulted to the proper driver mode NIC ConfigurationWindows 95

  10. In the Bindings section select the desired services that you want to bind to the driver NIC ConfigurationWindows 95

  11. If RTS/CTS mode of operation is desired, you would turn Medium Reservation on In the Advanced window it shouldn’t be necessary to change anything else for typical installation NIC ConfigurationWindows 95

  12. If you want Power management, here is where you would select it. Note: if your device has a hard drive device such as a lap top computer, the power savings in the power management mode would be insignificant If the device has a static storage device the power savings may be significant NIC ConfigurationWindows 95

NIC ConfigurationWindows 95 • The final step is to click OK and let the services bind to the driver • At this point you may be asked to insert the Windows 95 CD so that the services may be loaded • If this occurs then just follow the prompt • Now right-click on Network Neighborhood, and assign the IP address as you would for any other NIC installation

  14. Installation on Windows NT 4.0 • Prior to installing the wireless network interface card onto your NT 4.0 workstation • You should perform the following steps: • Enabling the PC card controller • Running Windows NT diagnostics • Enabling network support

  15. From the Control Panel Double-click on the PC card to open the PC card Properties window Note: here that the card is recognized; however, there are no drivers loaded yet so the card itself is disabled. Enabling the PC Card Controller

  16. Verify the I/O port and IRQ settings since NT 4.0 is NOT plug-and-play capable. From Administrative Tools click NT Diagnostics Note that the factory settings for the RoamAbout NIC are I/O port 03040-037F IRQ 10 These may require changing if there is a conflict Verifying the I/O port and IRQ settings Note that here in fact there would be a conflict with the IRQ of 10.

  17. Once you have verified the settings, you may need to select another (unused) IRQ and or I/O port. Which is discussed later in this presentation. Take note of the new value that you will use if you are going to change the defaults Verifying the I/O Port and IRQ Settings

  18. To install the NIC driver Right click on the Network Neighborhood icon Click on the Adapters tab Installing the NIC driverNT Workstation 4.0

  28. Note: from before the IRQ needed to be re-assigned as there was a conflict. The new IRQ is 9 Once complete click OK The Network properties window will still be open. Click OK to close it At this point the new adapter will bind to the protocol stacks Enter new IP information and restart your computer Configuring the NIC DriverNT Workstation 4.0

  29. Installation of the Client Utility • The client utility can come from one of two places • The floppy disk that was provided with the NIC • Off the Cabletron web site • Select the most current revision and download it • Be sure to review the release notes prior to installation

  30. Insert disk and run the setup file in the utils folder This will install the Client utility on the workstation Installation from the provided disk

  31. Installation of the AccessPoint Manager utility • The AccessPoint Manager is the utility used to manage the AccessPoint • This is the in-band management platform that can access the AccessPoint from either the wired or wireless networks associated with the AccessPoint • The AccessPoint is equipped with a COM port for out-of-band management using VT100 terminal emulation software if desired

  32. Downloading AccessPoint Manager • To get the latest version of the AccessPoint Manager go to www.cabletron.com/wireless • Select the most current revision and download it • Be sure to review the release notes prior to installation • Once the file is downloaded unzip it and install the utility
