  1. RELAXATION TRAINING -Using methods of general relaxation (total body relaxation), has been used for many years, to help patients learn to relieve or reduce pain, muscle tension, anxiety or stress. -Also in cases of associated physical impairments including tension headaches, high blood pressure, and respiratory distress.

  2. Common Elements of Relaxation Training:- Def.: Relaxation training involves reduction in muscle tension in the entire body or the region that is painful or restricted by conscious effort and thought.

  3. -Training occurs in a quite environment with low lighting and soothing music or an auditory cue on which the patient may focus .The patient performs deep breathing ex., therapist uses a soft tone of voice when giving instructions.

  4. Examples of Approaches to RelaxationTraining:- -Active Relaxation. -Local Relaxation. -General Relaxation.

  5. A-Active inhibition techniques are reflex relaxation procedures that physical therapists use to inhibit muscle tension or guarding prior to stretching or lengthening.

  6. Procedures for applications are: 1-Hold relax. (H R) 2-Hold relax with agonist contraction. ( H R-A C) 3-Agonist contraction .(A C)

  7. B-Local relaxation as: -Heat -Massage -Biofeed back -Joint traction or oscillation.

  8. C-General relaxation is:- -Autogenic training. -Progressive relaxation. -Awareness through movement.

  9. Indicators of relaxation:- -Decreased muscle tension. -Lowered heart and respiratory rate. -Lowered blood pressure. -Increased skin temperature in the extremities associated with vasodilatation. -Constricted pupils and eyes closed. -Little to no body movement. - Flat facial expression. -Jaw and hands relaxed with palms open. N.B. Any combination of local and general relaxation may be used by the ph. therapist to promote maximum muscle relaxation.
