What are adjectives? • Four main types: • Descriptive adjectives add detail and description to a noun; “tallman” or “delicious pizza. • Limiting adjectives specify or limit a noun; “my car” or “the three pizzas” • Predicateadjectives follow the linking verb and modify the subject; “I am interested in cooking” or “She is scared of the spider”

  3. What are adjectives? (cont.) • Verbals (specifically participles and infinitives) can act as adjectives; “The restaurant, averaging 567 customers a night, is doing pretty well,” or “The man, startled by the spider, screamed.” • Degrees- base, comparative, superlative. “Hamburgers are good, tacos are better, but steak is the best.”

  4. What are adjective phrases? • A phrase that can replace an adjective to give more detail: Instead of saying “The man was rich,” say “The man was rich beyond your wildest dreams.”

  5. Quiz Time! Identify the types of adjectives or adjective phrases in the following sentences: • The woman had three children. • The fast turtle didn’t exist. • The fat man is revolted by anchovies. • The houses in that neighborhood, averaging at 100,000,000 square feet, are immensely expensive. • My car, painted orange, is out of gas.
