  1. Math Fellow Training 2013 SMI Coordinator Training Objectives: Become familiar with the SMI test, the testing timeline, and SMI Reports Guide. Know how to navigate SAM creating classes and pulling reports. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  2. SMI Implementation • SMI (Scholastic Math Inventory) • Assessment Overview • SMI helps you determine each student’s readiness to learn grade level math curriculum so you can differentiate instruction to meet individual needs and benchmark progress towards achievement goals. • SMI reports students’ math achievement in Quantile measures. • SMI will be administered 3 to 5 times over the school year in order to measure Quantile growth. • Quantile Measure • A Quantile measure is a measurement of two components on the same developmental scale. • The difficulty of mathematical skill or concept. • The mathematical readiness (or understanding level) of a student for concepts and skills at his or her grade level. • A Q Taxon is a mathematical topic, concept, or skill included within the Quantile framework. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  3. SMI Testing timeline For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  4. Quantile Framework For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  5. SMI Performance Bands SMI Performance Bands allow you to see Quantile levels and should be used to support tutorial grouping. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  6. SMI Expected rate of growth and Tutoring Accelerate Growth Goal We NEED to accelerate growth in order to move students toward Proficiency. Our Growth Goal is 250 Quantile or more for ALL tutoring grades. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  7. Performance Level Growth Report Performance Level Growth Report shows Proficiency growth from one SMI to the next. It will always show baseline SMI to the most recently given SMI. You will see percentage of Proficiency as well as number of students. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  8. Growth Report Growth Report shows the baseline SMI score for a student and then tracks the growth to the most recent SMI test. You can sort how the data is represented by clicking on the top tabs. It will always display the most growth first. No growth students will be at the end. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  9. Intervention Grouping Report Intervention Grouping Reports are used to help with grouping students in tutoring. This report will help you to sort for cusp students. You are able to see the Fact Fluency screener to help with planning Do Nows. For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  10. Intervention Grouping www.quantiles.com For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  11. Student Progress Report For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  12. Student Progress Report Page 2 For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  13. Administering the SMI • Have students take the test in tutorial vs. classroom • Set the test ahead of time according to student academic levels using previous SMI scores, district scores, and state assessment scores • Sit students together when possible so Fellows can take notes and monitor the test questions • Give out whole group directions ahead of time to all students and Fellows in order to set building testing norms • Set SMI proficiency/growth goals with students ahead of time • Standardize the assessment • Provide appropriate accommodations for students For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  14. The Scholastic Achievement Manager • Look at packet for Using SAM • Navigating the Home Page • Home, Roster, Reports, Resources, Books • Add a School • Add a Class • Add a Teacher • Edit Teacher Profile • Add a Student • Enroll Students in SMI • Target SMI Math Level • Select Testing Settings For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  15. Questions? For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.

  16. Reflections/Continued Questions • Next Steps: • Create groups in SAM when you finalize them on-site • Set the test using T-Cap and/or previous SMI scores before SMI 1 • What is your system or plan for managing enrollment at your building? • How do you plan to analyze SMI data after the 5 administrations with your team of Fellows and core teachers? • How will you be transparent with this data at your school? What will that look like? For Use by DPS and Blueprint Only.
