Grading The Access to HE Diploma
The AHE Diploma • 2008 – 09: introduction of the (national) AHE Diploma • 60 credits with at least 45 at Level 3 • Differentiation by number of credits - in total/at level 3 • 2009 – 10: introduction of grading • Differentiation by grade profiles
Components of an AHE Diploma • Credit-based units of varying size: 1,2,3,6 (9,12) credits • Modules: • Main academic / vocational subject(s) • Study Skills • English/Maths (GCSE equivalence) • ICT
The Grading Model • Of all level 3 units contained within the Diploma tariff • 1 grade (P, M or D) per unit whatever the credit value • Unit grade profile developed from indicative grades in each assignment. Median = Unit grade • Unit grades represent assessment of knowledge + a range of skills • Average number of grades (this AVA) per Diploma = 17 • Pass = 100% assessment criteria
No Grade Polishing QAA Regulations • On-time submission is assessed and graded. • - first grade stands, subject to IV and EM. • One re-submission is allowed if criteria not met • - within very short time-frame. (M or D grade allowed) • Late submissions and referrals (via Awards Board) • - capped at a Pass
Making Conditional Offers • Access to HE Diploma - any subject • Accompanied by credit and grade transcript • Access to HE Diploma (named subject) • with ? credits in subject “x” • With ? credits (any subject) graded Merit • with ? credits in subject “y” graded Distinction • with unit “z” graded Merit • No UCAS points, no predicted grades
Making Conditional Offers Further considerations of the AHE learner • Returning to study • - need to break down barriers and build confidence • Few if any formal qualifications on entry • - bring maturity, motivation and life-skills • Induction period of Study Skills – transferred to HE • Unconditional offers lead to withdrawal from AHE course
