Advancing the voluntary, community-based sector Canada Volunteerism Initiative Local Network Province wide network Coastal Labrador, Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Placentia, Port au Port, St. Anthony, St. John’s • Self Assessment Sessions and Booklets in both official languages • available at www.enVision.ca • Funding activities: 8 funded totaling $35,000 assisting 23 orgs • Bi-lingual Essay Contest in 6 high schools – 4th year students from Faculty of Education volunteer to evaluate papers. • Working with Nunavut and North West Territories to to determine if their 9 booklet series on Volunteerism in Northern and Remote Communities is culturally appropriate to be published in English, French and Inuktitut. • National and Atlantic Region relationships CSC2005

Conducting leading-edge research Insuring Sector Survival: • Insurance and the Voluntary, Community-Based Sector in Newfoundland and Labrador • Findings are quite shocking • Few organizations carry adequate range of insurance Some evidence of negative impact on sector and growing reluctance to volunteer because of legal liability

Pioneering innovative programs and services Student Work And Service Program • Partnership with federal and provincial governments • Circulates 15,500 information packages • 587 students in 525 organizations in 189 communities • 7,500+ placements since inception • Province-wide monitoring of placements • 94.9% of students and 95.6% of sponsors rated their placements as “Excellent” or “Very Good” Research with past participants shows positive correlation with continuing community involvement and leadership CSC2005

Pioneering innovative programs and services Public Access • Helps clients get information about programs and benefits • Consolidation of 20 district offices saw frequent incidences of difficulty contacting Client Services Officers • Interprets various government manuals of income support and other government social support programs. • New provincial Act proclaimed December 2004 • 260 new requests • 27 advocacy cases: assistance with income support applications and appeals, housing/shelter assistance, and employment insurance CSC2005

Harnessing the power of technology • Members: 2173 (31% increase since 2003) • Orientation Sessions: 39 • Sessions: 1715 per day – 99.5% “repeat visitors” • Visits: 53,184 in January 2005; • Visits: 98 countries and 6 continents (multiple visits); • Web sites hosted: 89 live, 194 others in process • “Internet” pages: Initial architecture design 100 now 6,000 • Online Directory: 4981 listings • 2005 Downhome Web Award: Favourite Not-for-Profit Link CSC2005

Harnessing the power of technology • Training and Technical Support • Training for voluntary organizations: • 425 people from 23 communities Baie Verte, Bay Roberts, Clarenville, Conception Bay South, Corner Brook, Cupids, Elliston, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Harricott, Marystown, Mount Carmel, Mount Pearl, Placentia, Port Saunders, Southern Harbour, Southern Labrador, Springdale, St. Anthony, St. John’s, St. Joseph’s, Stephenville • Online Training began Dec. 2003 • 23 participants have received certificates • 1–800 technical support line • 1200+ calls since inception CSC2005
