Tomb’s Discovery • Tutankhamun’s tomb was a major discovery of the 19th century. • Carter (English archeologist) discovered Tut’s tomb on November 4, 1922 in the Valley of Kings, Egypt. • Lord Carnarvon gave Howard Carter funding for his work. He had the right to dig in the Valley of Kings. • Great discovery; made headlines across the world. • The tomb remained hidden from robbers for many years.

  3. Tomb’s Discovery(continued) • Was the most intact Pharonic tomb ever discovered. • Tomb revealed Tutankhamun’s rich lifestyle. • February 16, 1923 Howard carter opened burial chamber. First person to see Tutankhamun.

  4. THE CURSE • Belief in a curse started when some members of Carter’s team had mysterious deaths. • The curse was for those who disturbed or broken the seal of the tomb. They would die by a disease that no doctor could diagnose. • Lord Carnarvon died on April 5, 1923 after a mosquito bite became infected. Died 4 months and 7 days after opening the tomb. • George Jay Gould died in French Riviera May 16, 1923 after he developed fever following a visit to the tomb. • Howard Carter who opened the tomb on February 16, 1923 died on March 2, 1939.

TUTANKHAMUN’S TREASURE • The ante chamber is the largest and first room of the tomb where many of the treasures where found. • Howard Carter described the room “everywhere the glint of gold”. • Some of these treasures are carved chairs, beds, chariots, and Tutankhamun’s famous golden throne. • The golden Mask of Tutankhamun was one of the most stunning artifacts archaeologists have ever found in ancient times. • Tutankhamun’s mask was rich in value and craftsmanship. • The masks main element is gold with blue glass stripes in headrest and false bear. The eyes are made from quartz, pupils made from obsidian. They used red paint on the corner of the eyes to make them look life like. • The mask is too fragile to travel to exhibits around the world.

King Tut’s Tour In Toronto • King Tut Exhibit held at Art Gallery of Toronto • November 24, 2009 - April 2010 • 50 objects will be on display from the tomb . • Gold sandals from the mummy’s feet and a canopic jar that preserved his internal organs. • Exhibit highlights many of the most significant rulers of ancient Egypt, such as Khefren. His great pyramid is the only one remaining of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
