  1. Diffraction Studies at TeV I Sharon Hagopian Florida State University for the D0 and CDF Collaborations Rencontre de Physique de Vallee d’Aoste La Thuile, March 5, 1998

  2. 630 GeV Multiplicities Require 1 gap w/ 2.5 < |h| < 5.2 Plot detector multiplicity in same region on opposite side 630 GeV ET Distributions Double gap events vs. single gap and inclusive events w/ 2 leading jets > 12 GeV, |h_jet| < 1.0

  3. 630 GeV Multiplicities Require 1 gap w/ 2.5 < |h| < 5.2 Plot detector multiplicity in same region on opposite side D0 Preliminary 630 GeV ET Distributions Double gap events vs. single gap and inclusive events w/ 2 leading jets > 12 GeV, |h_jet| < 1.0

  4. Event Ratios (630 GeV only) • Let = fraction of POT events • in f, t BIN • (~0.5 mb) • (0.05-0.10) <0.20@630 • …which have ³ 2 jets above 7 GeV • Let = fraction of MB events • with 2 ³ JETS > 7GeV stat stat

  5. If 150-200 Gev pp collisions were as likely to have ³ 7 GeV JETS as 1500GeVpp, • would = • [Also ~ 10% GeV/1800 Gev]

  6. Hard Double Pomeron Exchange Gap Gap Studying · collisions gives an extra process to gain insight into nature of pomeron CDF: Demand track (0.05 < x < 0.1), 2 jets ET > 7 GeV measure multiplicity on opposite side D0: Demand gap on one side, 2 jets ET > 12, |h|<1 measure multiplicity on opposite side D0 Measure GAP multiplicity CDF here x= 1- x (fraction of momentum lost by the proton and carried by the pomeron)

  7. Color-Singlet Studies QCD color-singlet signal observed in ~ 1 % opposite-side events. f Dh jet jet h Publications DØ: PRL 72, 2332(1994) CDF: PRL 74, 885 (1995) DØ: PRL 76, 734 (1996) Zeus: Phys Lett B369, 55 (1996) • New Results • Color-Singlet fractions at • s = 630 & 1800 GeV • Color-Singlet Dependence on: • Dh, ET, s • (parton-x)

  8. Recent measurements of hard diffraction process - rates, h and Et dependencies, and comparisons with MC models • Help us to understand the nature of diffraction (the POMERON) and how diffraction fits into QCD • Large and luminosity at Tevatron allows probing of hard diffraction (hard scattering in events with Rapidity Gaps) TEVATRON HERA
