Net-Factories Mats Carlsson Swedish Institute of Computer Science matsc@sics.se Seventh Framework Programme: New Opportunities for International Cooperation – Brokerage Session Kharkov, 2010
Description ofSICS http://www.sics.se Non-profit research organisation. Member of ERCIM. Mission: contribute to the competitive strength of Swedish industry by (a) conducting computer science research (b) promoting the use of new research ideas and results in industry and society. Collaboration: collaborative R&D programs as well as specific companies. Track record since 1985: disseminates and promotes industrial deployment of research findings, establishes spin-off companies, licenses software and patents. In 2009 SICS had a turn-over of 102 MSEK and a research staff of 100, of which 45 PhDs.
Research Topics Relevant to SICS • List of research topics corresponding to FP7 ICT • Pervasive And Trusted Network And Service Infrastructures • Cognitive Systems and Robotics • Alternative Paths to Components and Systems • Digital Libraries And Content • ICT for the Enterprise and Manufacturing • Future and Emerging Technologies
Research Topics where Cooperation is Sought • WP Objective • ICT for the Enterprise and Manufacturing • Smart Factories: Energy-aware, agile manufacturing and customisation • Key concepts • Methods and tools for tasks such as: • Packing complex 3D parts under business rules and ergonomy constraints • Cutting complex 2D parts minimising waste • Vehicle loading for shipment and in-factory • Scheduling and dispatching activities
Scientific Approach and Challenges • Approach: building on NET-WMS • Constraint programming (CP) • Rule-based knowledge representation (KR) • Compilation from KR language to CP language • Challenges • Defining a KR language for packing problems with complex shapes under rules • Designing new hybrid continuous-discrete constraints for packing complex shapes • Designing an explanation system in case CP solver fails
