  4. What is an Interactive Notebook? • A personalized, clear textbook • A working portfolio -- all of your notes, classwork, etc. -- in one convenient spot

  5. Left Side – Right Side Orientation LEFT SIDE RIGHT SIDE Right side items are things from the teacher and text to be learned… TESTABLE ITEMS …input Left side items are the students… REFLECTIONS …output

  6. Right Side • Right is for Cornell Notes! • The right side “belongs” to Mrs. Washington and the text. • The right side has “testable” information. • The right side has a toolbox with vocabulary, formulas. • The right side has a summary for the day.

  7. Examples of Teacher Right Side Content • Notes, usually in the Cornell note-taking format (formulas, vocabulary) • Handouts • Graphic organizers • Example problems worked out with written “running” commentary • Content to go on a math foldable

  8. Left Side • The left is for “Your Way” of understanding the material. • The left side belongs to YOU! • The left side is where you record your PROCESSINGofthe teacher-provided notes, handouts, etc. (i.e. of the right side items).

  9. Examples of Student Left Side Work/Products • Songs, Poems, Raps • Graphic organizers • Foldables • Your re-writing of notesinto your own language and/or with illustrations • Math Graffiti/ Math Cartoons • Colorful and varied representations

  10. More Examples of Left Side Work/Products • Math journal entries(e.g. about real-world math, about the assigned Internet math practice homework) • Creative math memory hooks • Mental math models(e.g. a story about “good guys leaving” and “bad guys leaving” to explain pos/neg integer multiplication)

  11. Extra Credit Left Side Work/Products • math riddles(especially for geometry) • student-created math games requiring math expertise (both to create and play the game; can involve dice, spinners, etc.) • poems/raps to aid memoryof concepts or algorithms

  12. sample re-write of class notes into left sideMISN format source: http://ideasite.net/math/ . . . in your own language!

  13. Sample Math Memory Hook with Illustration source: http://ideasite.net/math/

  14. Sample Foldables

  15. Sample Venn Diagram

  16. Sample Math Riddle

  17. Maintaining the Interactive Notebook • Date and number each page (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, etc.). • No doodling that doesn’t relate to notes • No ripped out pages or torn corners

  18. Components of your Interactive Notebook • Cover – create colorful cover that has to do with math concepts • Table of Contents – create running table that includes skills

  19. Test Your MISN Knowledge Can you mentally fill in the blanks below and mentally “circle” the correct words? The right side is for _______ _____. It is for input/output. (circle one) from the _________. The left side is for _____________. It is for input/output. (circle one) from the _________.
