  8. Interesting Factoids • The Royal Road was lined with more than 110 inns. Each built about 15 miles apart, or about one day’s journey by horseback. The kings messengers carried information from inn to inn, keeping travelers and locals informed. • Greek warships called triremes had three levels of oarsmen on each side. Shipbuilders armed the boat with bronze-and-wood rams that weighed hundreds of pounds. They could sink other ships by hitting them with their rams.

  9. Interesting Factoids • The Persians used many different peoples to bolster their army. The Scythians lived in the grasslands north of the Black Sea and used hit-and-run tactics to keep the Persians from seizing their homeland. Darius so admired their skills with bows and arrows that he hired them to help invade Greece.
