  2. Description of Species -The Pallid Sturgeon may reach a length of 60 inches, but no one has found a Sturgeon longer then 30 inches in Kansas. The belly has no scales, and the barbels on the snout are uneven, the outer ones being the longest.

  3. Map Counties: -Atchison -Doniphan -Douglas -Johnson -Leavenworth -Wyandotte Kansas

  4. Habitat -Pallid Sturgeon prefer large rivers that have areas of swift currents over sand. Pallid Sturgeon are mainly restricted to the Missouri River, other rivers in Kansas do not provide the right habitat.

  5. Highest Estimated Population • There are around 200 Pallid Sturgeon in Kansas, they are rarely seen.

  6. Food Web • Pallid Sturgeon are bottom feeders, their diet consist of some insects and smaller fish. It also eats minnows and mosquito like insects which are the Sturgeon’s main food. Nothing is known to eat the Sturgeon.

  7. Why/When it is Endangered • The Pallid Sturgeon was listed endangered on September 6, 1990. It was listed because people were killing the fish off and the population had gotten so low that they must endanger it to keep it alive. They also had to mature to 15 until they could lay eggs, and only laid around 12 every time.

  8. Biotic Potential • They can live up to a century. It takes them 15 years to mature so they cant lay eggs until they are 15. They lay around 15 eggs each time. Once they are 15 they are able to reproduce.
