  3. Main • South Dakota historian Doane Robinson : the idea of carving the likenesses of famous people into the Black Hills region of South Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region. (later the Mount Rushmore was preferred to the Needles sites) Doane Robinson(October 19, 1856 - 1946)
