Cell transport refers to the movement of materials into, out of, and within the cell. It includes processes such as osmosis, diffusion, and active transport. The purpose of cell transport is to maintain homeostasis, eliminate waste, and distribute materials within the cell and organism.

CELL TRANSPORT What is it?
Definition: • Cell Transport is moving materials into, out of, or within the cell • Cell Transport within the cell (intracellular) is accomplished by- • The endoplasmic reticulum and • Cytoplasmic streaming
Cell transport between cells • Is accomplished through the cell (plasma) membrane
What is the purpose of cell transport? • Cells need to bring in materials necessary for homeostasis • Cells need to get rid of wastes • Cells produce materials that will be used in other parts of the cell, or outside the cell in other parts of the organism
Let’s review the structure- 3 http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cms.htm
The jobs of the plasma membrane are: • To decide what goes into and out of the cell, • Communication between cells • Carrying markers to identify the cell
Water • Passes freely through the cell membrane • This process is called osmosis • The water content is determined by the concentration of water inside and outside the cell • Water will move from where there is more of it to where there is less of it http://web.educastur.princast.es/proyectos/biogeo_ov/2BCH/B2_CELULA/t22_MEMBRANA/gifs/osmosis.gif
Passive Transport • Also called diffusion - is accomplished through the membrane proteins • The cell does not have to use any of its own energy for this to happen http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf1.htm 4
Active transport • Also uses membrane proteins, but the cell is required to use energy for this to happen • Works against the concentration gradient http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf1c.htm
Active Transport • Special types are endocytosis-when the cell engulfs molecules within a vacuole • and exocytosis-when the cell expels molecules from a vacuole 2 http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf4a.htm
The other proteins in the membrane • Are receptor molecules for communication between cells • And marker proteins that identify the cell http://personal.tmlp.com/JImr57/textbook/chapter3/cmf2.htm 2
