Introduction: Joan Grace • CEO of PrintNZ(nine years) and PrintNZ Training (twelve years) • Government background - policy development for funding industry training • Initiated rebrand of the association to reflect the current industry • Association has increased the number of member companies from 350 to over 600 during time as CEO

This is New Zealand • Independent nation and member of the British Commonwealth • Comparable in size and shape to Great Britain or Japan • English and Maori are the official languages • Population: 4.1 million • 85% of the population lives in urban areas • Nation of small businesses: 96% employ fewer than 20 people

This is PrintNZ • Single resource centre including apprenticeship training. • Hosts other associations - labels, paper, business forms, print finishers. • Membership accounts for 90% of the production in the industry. • Members drawn from every sector of the industry. • Roles: • Lobbying - environmental issues, industrial relations, training • Raise profile of industry - marketing strategy • Research and analysis - annual industry report

  6. Print: Part of Life Print Plays a Big Part in our Lives This campaign is all about print. People who already work with print like designers, advertisers and marketers know that print is a great medium to work with and delivers the results they are looking for.

Print: Part of Life Content • The campaign will: • Inform consumers and print buyers (marketing professionals and advertising agencies) about the benefits of using print. • Remind consumers of print’s irreplaceable role in their lives and inform them of what print can offer. • Present the facts about print so people are fully informed when making sustainable choices. • Reinforce the many benefits that print offers them as part of the marketing mix. • Provide information and a united voice for the printing industry.

  8. Print: Part of Life • Print plays a big part in communication • Printers can work with customers to develop material that will communicate their message • and promote their company. Consumers trust print. • Print plays a big part in business • - Print is used by every business in New Zealand to give it identity, to perform business functions and to inform their customers of the goods and services they offer. • Print plays a big part in learning • - Imagine a school without books. Print is essential for reading, writing and learning. • Print has a good environmental story • Over the last 20 years the printing industry has reduced its carbon footprint by 97% - • a huge achievement that is matched by very few other industries.

Challenges Facing NZ Printing Industry • Weak economic indicators – although high commodity prices • Threat from imported print into New Zealand • Manufacturing moving offshore • Consolidation of printing companies • Skill shortages • Increased focus on environmental matters • Christchurch earthquake

  11. This is Communications & Media ITO (Apprenticeships) • Industry Training Organisation (ITO), funded by Government and industry • CMITO’s purpose is to: • provide skills leadership • set industry skill standards • work with the industry • work with the Government
