  2. The Gospels • The Gospels were referred to as the “ Good News of the Lord”. • There were Four Gospel Writers total whose names were - Matthew - Mark - Luke - John

  3. Matthew ( 80 A.D.) • Matthew was believed to have written the First Gospel(Mark was the original first Gospel writer) • The Gospel of Matthew is believed to be the first of the Gospels to be written, considering it is put first in the Bible • Matthew starts with a prologue • Matthew ends with resurrection of Jesus Christ - It was Matthew who tells how Jesus is related to Abraham and David - Matthew also talks about Miracles the Jesus Performed( such as Jesus walking on water) - Matthew was known for being the “ Tax Collector” - Matthew is represented by an angel

Mark ( 60 A.D.-70 A.D.) • Mark was a disciple and interpreter of Peter • The reason we know this is from scripture and the fact that he didn’t know his way around the area, as described in one of the readings • It was written after the death of Peter around 65 A.D.- 80 A.D. • Marks gospel was written in Rome • Mark originally wrote in Greek • Marks style of writing was clear and direct • Mark wrote primarily for Roman Christians • The symbol for Mark is the winged lion

Luke ( 90 A.D.) • Luke was born in Antioch • Luke was trained in Medicine considering the he is the patron saint of surgeons and physicians • Luke’s Gospel is the Gospel of the poor and social justice • Luke was close in association with St. Paul • Luke made the Hail Mary prayer • Luke is represented by the winged ox • Luke died at age eighty-four

John ( 100 A.D.) • John’s Gospel was called the single, most influential book of the New Testament • Johns Gospel is the most precious Gospel out of the four • John wrote to win others to enjoy faith in Christ • The Divine Son ship of Jesus is set forth in John more than anywhere else in the New Testament • The Key word to John’s Gospel is Believewhich is used ninety-eight times in John’s Gospel • John writes towards the “ Thinking man” • We read John around Easter time because John has the only mentioning of Easter in the entire Bible • Saint John is represented by an Eagle
