  3. How are preschoolers different from infants and toddlers? • Infants and Toddlers • Struggle to gain mastery over physical skills and verbal communication • Frustrated with inabilities of toddlerhood • Preschoolers • Can use language to express most needs, emotions, ideas • Can run, spin, jump, and climb more freely • Much more independent • Feels strong sense of power, resists help and advice

  4. Wishes of a Preschooler To be disobedient to adult authority To be independent To indulge in forbidden play places To have power over adults To win out over adults To play with language in an inventive, rhythmic way

  5. Characteristics of 3’s • Sibling rivalry • Books like “Nobody Asked Me If I Wanted a Baby Sister” help children cope • Fears of dark, scary animals, strangers, and strange situations • Real vs. Unreal • Books play large role in relating to and soothing these fears. • Sophisticated imaginative fairytales can cause anxious reactions due to inability to distinguish between real and unreal at this age • Folktales, which deal with ordinary folk are fine

  6. What do 3 year olds enjoy reading? • Nursery Rhymes, Mother Goose, and Humor • Nonsense syllables, silly, invites children to participate • Real life information • Domestic and exotic animals, farm life, simple stories of what workers do, transportation, and seasons • Still have an urge to label and understand their world • Stories that are real or made up about themselves or their own doings • Substitute the child’s own name in a story when out of ideas! • Bedtime stories • Soothing assurance closes daytime activities

  7. Characteristics of 4’s • Go, Go, Go! Full of Energy! • Loves stories that are out of bounds, have absurd situations, and extravagant language • Interested in social relationships and group play • Books about friends are appealing • Who, what, how come? • Stories that “wonder” Ex: Where Does the Butterfly Go When It Rains?” • I Spy hunt-and-finds, scratch-and-sniff, or pop-up books • Safe-scare and silly words • Love foolish silliness and scariness, if it ends safely

  8. What do 4 year olds enjoy reading? • Story Plots • Plots must be simple and clear, the action swift and direct, and suspense and thrills should be quickly and satisfactorily resolved • How does it feel, taste, and smell? • Learn through senses, examine text and illustrations • Respond to sensory words • Scratch-and-sniff or pop-up books • This is my family! • Look for books where children share household job roles

  9. Venn Diagram Create a Venn Diagram about reading characteristics of toddlers, 3 year olds, and 4 year olds.
