  7. 5. Banal Someone or something that is so common that it is boring

  8. 6. Demure Someone who is quiet and shy

  9. 7. Formidable Something that is so large or strong that it makes you feel threatened. Ex: Hurricane Katrina

  10. 8. Immaculate To be spotlessly clean

  11. 9. Arduous A task that takes a lot of effort

  12. 10. Err To make a mistake

  13. WEEK TWO • September 9-13

  14. 1. Stricken • If you are stricken with something, you are suffering from it.

  15. 2. Torrent • A torrent is a large amount of fast and furiously flowing water

  16. 3. Rapt • If you are rapt, something amazes you and captures your attention.

  17. 4. Preoccupied • When you’re preoccupied with something, you are thinking about it so much that you don’t notice other things.

  18. 5. Possess • If you possess something, you own it and control it

  19. 6. Expanse • An expanse is a wide, open area.

  20. 7. Retaliate • When you retaliate, you get revenge for something that someone has done to you

  21. 8. Ameliorate • Someone who ameliorates a situation makes it better or easier

  22. 9. Capitulate • When you capitulate, you give up and surrender

  23. 10. Furtive • Furtive people are secretive and sneaky because they are trying to hide what they are doing.

  24. WEEK THREE • September 16-20

  25. 1. mainstay • A mainstay is the most important part of something, the part that supports everything else.

  26. 2. odyssey • An odyssey is a long, eventful journey

  27. 3. grueling • A grueling experience is so difficult it exhausts you.

  28. 4. scour • When you scour something, you scrub it in order to clean it.

  29. 5. hierarchy • A hierarchy is a way of ranking group members based on their importance.

  30. 6. integral • Something that is an integral part of something else is absolutely necessary for it to work

  31. 7. regale • If you regale someone, you entertain him or her with stories.

  32. 8. pan • If you pan an area, you look slowly across it from side to side.

  33. 9. deference • When you show deference, you act in a way that shows a deep respect for someone or something.

  34. 10. epitome • The epitome of something is the best example or model of it.

  35. WEEK 4 VOCABULARY • September 23-27

  36. 1. Supple • Something that is supple is soft and bends easily.

  37. 2. Disregard • If you disregard something, you decide that it is not worth paying attention to.

  38. 3. Gnarled • Something that is gnarled is wrinkled and twisted, usually because it is old.

  39. 4. Wan • People who look wan look pale because they are weak or worn out

  40. 5. Muse • When you muse about something, you think about it deeply.

  41. 6. Explicit • Something that is explicit is explained so clearly that it can’t possibly be misunderstood.

  42. 7. Nostalgic • When you feel nostalgic, you remember a happier time in the past.

  43. 8. Somber • When you are somber, you feel sad and gloomy.

  44. 9. Congregate • When people congregate, they come together in a group.

  45. 10. Postulate • When you postulate something, you make an educated guess that it’s true.

  49. 2. Devotion • Devotion is a deep love and admiration for someone or something.

  50. 3. Presumptuous • If you are presumptuous, you decide that you have the right to do things that are none of your business.
