  3. UWin eDS What is an Enterprise Directory Service (eDS)? An Enterprise Directory contains critical customization information for people, processes, resources and groups (on-campus and off) An identity management system is an integral component of an eDS. It contains processes and infrastructure for the creation, maintenance and retirement of UserIDs and accounts (Uwin ID).

  4. UWin eDS Goals of the Project • Build a trusted and authoritative data source for University of Windsor resources. One that is robust, flexible, general-purpose, standards-based • Always on, always there

  5. UWin eDS Goals (In doing so….) Move toward a enterprise-wide, general-purpose, standard protocol directory and away from special purpose, system specific directories and data passing Develop a process for identity management and relationship management. example: one person with staff/student/alumni roles

  6. UWin eDS Goals (Cont’d) • Provide authentication services, integrating with campus-wide and application specific security services. • Fewer passwords, better service….

  9. UWin eDS 2004/2005 Accomplishments Developed an application which merges data from authoritative sources (SIS, HRIS, telecommunications, etc.) into eDS.

  10. UWin eDS 2004/2005 Accomplishments • On-line campus “directory” for searching people, locations and extensions. • Opportunistic projects (if we build it they will come) • Experts list - Heat Interface • Class notification - Software Depot

  11. UWin eDS 2004/2005 Accomplishments Introducing “course taught” data into the eDS Notes password synchronization. Promote the UWin ID concept.

  12. UWin eDS Identity Management Developed framework Revamped categories of accounts Developed rules for standard resources for each type of account Introduced lifecycle states and dates Automating the movement of states from birth to death using a rules based system

  13. UWin eDS What lies ahead? • Continue with unfinished business • UserID lifecycle programs (still much to accomplish here) • Notes Connector • UWin admin application - tools to allow HelpDesk staff to handle calls and exceptions.

  14. UWin eDS What lies ahead? (cont’d) • UWin Self-service • Account and IT related information • Investigate authentication mechanisms for Web applications.

  15. Directory Services Also ahead? • New services when they arrive • Learning Management System • Novell connector • Enhancement to online campus “directory” (similar to sessionals) • Need to get a better handle on the policy issues. • E-mail aliases and vanity e-mail.
