About Virtual Virginia • It is a program of the Virginia Department of Education. • It offers online Advanced Placement, world language, core academic, elective courses to student across the Commonwealth and nation. • The program allows for a wide rang opportunity due to the fact that it is virtual. Teachers can be anywhere to teach, so students are able to be helped by teachers around the nation.

Focus: Desire2Learn • Desire2Learn (D2L) is a web-based course management system designed to create a rich online learning environment for students. • D2L includes features such as an electronic dropbox, automated grade book, discussion boards, and quizzes. • There are minimum software and hardware requirement for taking the courses. • Headphones and microphones • Scanner • Telephone and it’s connection • Firefox 19.02 • Safari 6.0.2

  5. How to create a username and password? • Your username and password will be sent to your counselor and mentor prior to the first day of you course. • If you are having trouble with your account contact the Help Desk. The number is on a previous slide.

  6. How Do You Log in to D2L? • Open up an Internet browser (Firefox, Safari, or Chrome Note: Internet Explorer is NOT supported by Virtual Virginia) • Go to http://www.virtualvirginia.org • Enter username and password in the Course Login area in the upper right corner of the VVa homepage.

How Do you See Your Courses in D2L? • Once you successfully accessed the D2L MyHome page by Logging In with your username and password, look for the box labeled My Virginia Department of Education Courses in the middle of the screen. • Click on the plus sign (+) beside the current semester. • Click on the plus sign (+) beside the department name, and then • Click on your course name. • You should now be at your D2L Course Home page.

  8. How Do you Access the Course Materials? • Use the navigational tool bar along the top of your course homepage. The links located on this tool bar allows you to access materials within your course. Some tools that your instructor may be using include: • News which will be visible on your course home page. Please check this area for important course announcements. • Content which may include your course syllabus, reading material, or homework instructions. • Grades where you can see your grades on assignments throughout the semester. • Dropbox where you can submit electronic copies of your homework to your instructor. • Quizzes where you can complete course quizzes.

  9. Helpful Tips • The browser 'Back' button does not work well in the D2L environment. • When exiting your D2L course, be sure to click on the Logout link AND close the browser window. This is especially important if you are using a computer in a public lab.
