  1. Sonoluminescence “The Star in a Jar”

  2. What it is A process by which light is produced by a liquid when it is stimulated by sound waves.

  3. Process Get a flask Attach a microphone and two speakers using glue Take some tap water and degas it Put it into the refrigerator and let it cool Take it out and pour the water into the flask Find the highest frequency that the glass has by using the function generator Try to insert a bubble into the middle of the water Compare what happens at different frequencies

  4. Basic Setup

  5. How Sonoluminescence Works A bubble is bombarded by high frequency sound waves The bubble then oscillates, causing it to emit light

  6. The SonoluminescenceProcess

  7. Left: Setup for Sonoluminescence experiment Right: Function Generator in use

  8. Success! Sonoluminescence has been achieved!

  9. Special Recognition Thank you to Arie (A.J.) and Greg for all of your help and guidance during this experiment.

  10. This presentation was brought to you by Shane Stryzinski, Paul Carey, Nathan Tebbe, and David Willoughby
