  1. High altitude balloon DDF Team Leader: Josh Beighle Group Members: Adam Chen, Aaron Seyfried Faculty Advisors: Dr. John Wu, Dr. Joseph Slater Industry Advisors: Bruce Rahn, Nicolas Baine April 20, 2012

  2. Overview • Test Experiment Design • Testing Measurement Data • Demonstration • Kit Issues • Solutions

  3. Experiment Design • Red dot represents handheld CW beacon • Person in car drives in oval formation around operator • Corresponding LEDs light up in the direction the signal is coming from accordingly • System will be utilized in foxhunting upon completion 0º 270º 90º 180º

  4. Experiment Design

  5. Experiment Design

  6. Experiment Design

  7. Testing Measurement Data • Measurement data for the small scale testing will be mostly qualitative data • Testing will focus on relative accuracy and consistency of the system • This data will reflect the usability of our system at the CW beacon frequency (146.565 MHz, 2-meter band) and further calibration techniques

  8. Testing Measurement Data Note: One data sheet for each kit. Time and location will be determined from measurements from both kits

  9. Demonstration • “Beeline Big Beacon” • Programmable 440 MHz beacon • Adjustable frequency for package dissemination • Morse Code reads: W1WSU Command

  10. Issues • First Kit Issues • Finding the CW Signal • Audio signal sporadic • Second Kit • Assembled, not functional • Pending functionality of first kit • Once problems are diagnosed, second kit will become functional quickly

  11. Solutions

  12. Solutions • Functional rigging persists • Utilize instructional videos • Documentation provided from Ramsey Electronics is vague • Further testing will continue with CW beacon source

  13. Yagi Antennas • Reconfigured RG58 connection point

  14. Sponsors • The Ohio Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) • Wright State University Curriculum Development Grant • National Science Foundation (NSF)

  15. Summary • Test Experiment Design • Testing Measurement Data • Issues • Solutions

  16. Questions • Josh Beighle: beighle.3@wright.edu • Adam Chen: chen.83@wright.edu • Aaron Seyfried: awseyfried@gmail.com
