    7. Components Clear understanding of teaming Interdisciplinary team structure Common planning time Teachers are essential decision makers Guidance, advisement, and support are essential Extensive co-curricular opportunities Emphasis is on developing relationships

    8. Element Two Establishing a Curriculum for Exemplary Middle Level Schools Focus is on: Balancing the tension between student developmental needs and the demands of programming such as No Child Left Behind. Students and standards.

    9. Components Unique developmental characteristics of early adolescents Standards Flexible grouping Applied, relevant learning activities Exploration, self-discovery Students actively participate in decision making with teachers

Components Clear vision of goals, expectations, and beliefs Collaboration Warm, welcoming, and safe environment Recognition of contributions of early adolescents Support the development and self-esteem of students Strong connections between home and school High Expectations for behavior and academics Support for smooth transitions

    12. Element Four Staffing the Exemplary Middle Level School Focus is on: Collaboration Excellence in meeting the needs of students Unique education and training for MS staff Ability to support students and content Education Experience Balance

    13. Components Preparation to meet unique needs of early adolescents Understanding of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral needs of early adolescents Employing educational strategies that actively engage students Integration of content areas

Element Five Defining the Leadership for the Exemplary Middle Level School Focus is on: Shared leadership Work the crowd Close, ongoing interactions with students Collaborative work to create high behavioral and academic expectations Insight into unique talents of all Create opportunities to build leaders

    15. Components Strong supportive leadership within teams and the school Students are the center of the school Recognition of the value of communities of learners Climate of mutual respect, shared involvement, and ownership How students are taught is as important as what they are taught
