1. What is the opening statement? • “In this story, several characters have to make difficult decisions.” • Everyone’s FIRST sentence!!!!
2. List the characters that made difficult decisions in in this story. • Marta • Marta’s Grandfather • Mr. Schmidt • Marta’s Principal
3. Choose one character and explain the decision he/she had to make. • WHAT WERE THESE CHARACTERS’ DIFFICULT DECISIONS? • Marta • Marta’s Grandfather • Mr. Schmidt • Marta’s Principal
4. What type of person would make a decision like this? • Think about the S.T.E.A.L. process. • Use your list of character traits to get a specific trait that matches that particular character. • Why would you use this word to describe this person?
Make a Meaningful Connection!! • Give an example of a hard decision made by one of the following: • A character in another story or book you have read • Someone in history • Someone in the media (current) • Yourself • WHAT WAS THE DECISION? WHY WAS IT HARD? • HOW CAN YOU CONNECT THIS DECISION WITH YOUR CHARACTER’S DECISION???
ANSWERING THE OPEN-ENDED QUESTION • After reviewing the guided questions let’s start discussing how to formally answer this question. • Use the R.A.C.E format!!!
R=restate • Restate the opening statement FIRST-”In this story, several characters have to make difficult decisions.” • Restate the question in EACH answer: • One character, in “The Scholarship Jacket” who had to make a difficult decision was (NAME OF CHARACTER). (NAME’S) difficult decision was (IDENTIFY DECISION). It was a difficult decision because…… • (Character’s Name) decision shows the reader that (character name) is (use a character trait)
A= ANSWER • IN YOUR OWN WORDS ANSWER EACH QUESTION IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!!! • Use your answers from the worksheet to help you answer each bullet/question. • Again, remember this is for YOUR WORDS, NOT THE AUTHOR’S!!!
C= Cite • Go back into the text and find the part that helped you come up with an answer you have given. Use this as your evidence. • “The reader knows this because……….” • “In the text it states…………..” • “According to the text…………….” THE QUOTE MUST SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER!!!
E= EXPAND • Make a meaningful connection!! • Look at #5 from the guided reading questions. • Explain something from OUTSIDE of the text that CONNECTS to the story. • Explain HOW it relates to the story. • “Just like Mr. Schmidt had to decide which student to back up, ( enter your outside connection here). • Keep going back and forth between the text and your outside connection to show how it REALLY is a true connection!
“EXTRAS” • Be certain to follow the format! • Use GREAT vocabulary words! • Use a metaphor, simile, hyperbole, imagery to get your point across to the reader. • Check your work for errors in grammar and usage. • Re-read your answer before handing it in.
