  3. Add er to a word when you are comparing two things. • The cat is smaller than the dog. • Add est to a word when you are comparing three or more things. • That is the biggest cat I have ever seen.

  4. Comparative Endings: -er and –est • Remember to say the base word and then add the ending shorter shortest

  5. Sometimes the final consonant is doubled before -er or –est is added. • sadder saddest

  6. If the base word ends in y, change the y to an i before adding –er or -est • happier happiest
