Key Design Considerationsof Montana Common Core Standards • A focus on the results rather than means • By emphasizing required achievements, the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed. • Teachers are thus free to provide students with whatever tools and knowledge their professional judgment and experience identify as most helpful for meeting the goals set out in the Standards. Montana teachers can use American Indian topics, resources, and literature to meet standards, even where Indian Education for All is not specifically mentioned.

Staircase of Complexity • In order to prepare students for the complexity of college and career-ready texts, each grade level requires a “step” of growth on the “staircase.” Students read the central, grade-appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient; they create more time and space in the curriculum for this close and careful reading, and provide appropriate and necessary scaffolding and supports so the text is possible for students reading below grade level to read.

Text-based Answers • Students have rich and rigorous conversations which are dependent on all students reading a common text. Academic Vocabulary • Students constantly build the vocabulary they need to be able to access grade-level complex texts.
