Day 1 Tuesday (June 16, 2009) • Arrival at San Juan, Batangas • Familiarizing with the place • Acquainting with the CHDP staff • Courtesy call with the City Administrator (Mr. Mindanao), Municipal Health Officer (Dr. Alidio), Municipal Nurse (Ma’am Ludy de Castro), Police Chief (Supt. Abrugena) • Bonding with our foster family (Paral family)

Week 1 Observations and Insights • Some families, especially the first-timers in housing interns, may feel apprehensive in letting total strangers live with them for six weeks because they have this notion that these interns are fragile, rich kids from Manila. It’s really up to us interns to make our foster families feel at ease and to integrate ourselves with the community.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • Giving PHLs or Mother’s Classes for the patients and BHWs is an effective way for knowing the people’s perception of different health topics and for correcting misconceptions regarding these topics.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • The phrases “malapit lang” and “walking distance” gained whole new meanings in just a few days of staying in the community.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • The Community Medicine rotation can be expensive. Aside from the weekly 600 pesos roundtrip fare from Manila to Batangas, transportation fares from one place to another within San Juan can range from 60-100pesos one-way. Mabuti pa’y lakarin na lang, “walking distance” lang naman.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • We noticed that there are lots of Carboceisteine and Phenylpropanolamine stocked at the Barangay Health Centers while there is little or no supply of ORS, anti-biotics and pain medications.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • Panlasa means pakiramdam. • Medico means albularyo. • Lambanog is the drink of choice when it comes to alcoholic beverages.
Week 1 Observations and Insights • In just one week, we’ve had so many valuable experiences already – the warm welcome of our foster family, the “thank you po doc, bumuti po ang panlasa ko” of our patients, the smiles and greetings of the people whenever we pass by while walking to the health center, all the beautiful sites of the community, and many others. All these gave us a feeling of unique sense of happiness while serving our underserved countrymen.
Thank Ü
