  1. The Parable of the Householder Growing and Facilitating Growth

  2. Matthew 13:51-53 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” 53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there

  3. “Have you understood all these things?” What is in view when Jesus says “all these things”? Parables of Matthew 13 Parable of the Sower Parable of the Weeds Parable of Hidden Treasure Parable of Pearl of Great Price Parable of the Dragnet

  4. This, the 6th Parable of Matthew 13… Centers on Two Things…. Understanding the Content of the Word of God in General and the Parables in Particular and Understanding the Word of God to be a Treasure

  6. Who is in View Here… Matt 13:52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house A Scribe is a Disciple who Transcribes the Word of God and Passes it on to Others --- it is You and I

  7. We are Called to Two Things… To Understand: (v.51) “Have you understood all these things?” Pass the Treasure on: (v. 52) “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

  8. Why a Master of a House? The Master of the House was… called to Nurture and Provide for his family Supply those he loves with what they most need

  9. Why Pass on Understanding? The Content of the Word is a Treasure --- if Understood Correctly Spiritual Benefit and Proper Focus upon God’s Glory will come only through Properly Understanding God’s Word The Truth Shall set you Free

  10. Yet… Understanding Alone is… Not Enough James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

  11. Yet… Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

  12. 1 Peter 1:23-25 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the Word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

  13. Our Growth In the Lord…. 1 Peter 2:2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow…

  14. We are Sanctified…. John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

  15. Understanding the Word of God… Is the first Gift the Lord gives us as He moves us towards… Obedience What we understand… He equips us to embrace… What we understand and embrace leads us to act in an obedient fashion

  16. And the Specific Act of Obedience in View is… Matt 13:51-52 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

  17. Knowledge of the Word of God is… The Key to Spiritual Growth for… You and… for the growth of those around you… as you each share the Treasure with one another

  18. If Emotions Were the Key… To Kingdom Growth… The Word would say so Churches would then be sanctioned to focus on manipulating the emotions of churchgoers

  19. If the Human Will Were the Key… To Kingdom Growth… The Word would say so Churches would be sanctioned to induce churchgoers to make “faith decisions”

  20. But Understanding and Knowledge is the Key… Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord Matthew 22:37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  21. Matthew 13:51-53 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasurewhat is new and what is old.”

  22. The Treasure is…. Both the Old and New Testament Both the Law and Grace The Entire Word of God

  23. Our Growth In the Lord…. 1 Peter 2:2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow…
