  3. Course Requirements: • Professional attendance, careful reading of required texts and resources, active participation, timely completion of assignments, and self-evaluation. Attendance is required at all sessions. • Capstone Model Lesson: • Students will write a lesson plan focusing on reading and writing for their theme unit. The lesson is expected to incorporate the strategies learned in ESMM 503. • Regular and prompt attendance 25% • Active class participation and completed class assignments 25% • Written Lesson and Lesson Presentation 25% • Course Assessment 25% • TOTAL 100%

  7. Phoneme Practice All sound No writing Phoneme isolation Teacher : What is the first sound in van? Students: The first sound in van is /v/. The /b/ tells the instructor to only say the sound.

  8. Phoneme Identity • Children recognize the same sounds in different words. Teacher What sound is the same in fix, fall and fun? Student The first sound /f/ is the same Phoneme categorization • Children recognize the word in a set of three or four words that has the “odd” sound. Teacher: Which word does not belong? Bug, bus,rug.

Phonemic Awareness • Here are some other examples of phonemic awareness skills:  Segmentation, including the ability to judge if two words start the same or end the same remove a phoneme from a word count phonemes in a word, and blend sounds together Awareness of sound patterns in the language • Students are able to break a word into separate sounds, saying each sound, then write each sound, and read the word.

  11. Phonics Reading - process of mentally interpreting written symbols. Facility in reading is an essential factor in educational progress, and instruction in this basic skill is a primary purpose of elementary education.

  12. More than just sound • Sound/symbol identification, including knowing the letters by sight and by sound, and matching letters with the appropriate sounds and vice versa

  13. Phonics Instruction Knowledge of the alphabetic principle contributes greatly to children’s ability to read words both in isolation and in connected text. Unfortunately most curriculum only provide phonics instruction through the second grade.
