  2. College WeekOctober 10-14 This week at Burchett and across Texas we are celebrating Generation Texas or College Week. Everyday this week, we will feature one Texas college on our morning announcements. It’s never to early to start thinking about what college you’d like to go to! On Friday, we will have a college spirit contest! Staff and students will have the chance to show their college spirit by dressing up in their favorite college gear or school colors! Burchett Bobcats are College-Bound!

College: What’s Right For Me? • Community Colleges and Trade Schools • You can earn a 2-year degree, like an Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degree • Trade schools offer certificates in many areas like cosmetology, auto and aero-mechanics, and culinary arts • Lone Star College and Houston Community College are community colleges in our area • 4-year Colleges & Universities • You can earn a Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) • You can also go on to earn a Master’s Degree (2 years) and/or a Doctorate Degree (4 years) • You may choose to live on campus in a dorm room • UT, Texas A&M, University Of Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston are some of the universities in our area

  4. WHAT IS A DEGREE? • There are many types of degrees you can earn when you go to college. You decide what you are interested in and take the classes you need for the degree you want. After you complete all those classes, you will earn a degree! • Associates Degree (takes about 2 years) • Bachelor’s Degree (takes about 4 years) • Master’s Degree (takes about 2 years) • Doctorate Degree (takes bout 4 years)

  5. Why Should I Go To College? • College students have the chance to explore their interests, pursue their goals, and meet lifelong friends • People who go to college earn about $20,000 per year more than high school graduates earn!

  6. How Can I Pay For College? • Scholarships—Based on academic and/or athletic performance and special interests and talents, you can earn free money for school! • Financial Aid—If you can’t afford college, you can get help to pay for school. • Work Study Programs—There are jobs available to help you pay for school.

Sam Houston State University • Named for Sam Houston, Texas’ greatest hero • Offers 79 bachelor’s degree programs, 54 master’s programs and five doctoral programs, including nationally recognized programs in Business, Fine Arts, Education, Mathematics  and Criminal Justice • The SHSU mascot is the bearkat • Staff members who attended SHSU are: • Mr. Duncan • Mrs. Reyna • Mrs. Clark • Ms. Bayer GO BEARKATS!!

University of Houston • University of Houston is a major public research and teaching institution, serving more than 38,500 students with nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate programs • The UH mascot is the cougar. • Staff members who graduated from UH are: • Mrs. Mouton • Mrs. Gerner • Mrs. Romero • Mrs. Comisso COUGAR PRIDE!!!

University of Texas • The University of Texas at Austin was founded in 1883. • UT is one of the largest universities in the nation with over 50,000 students. • There are over 1oo degrees offered at UT. • Bevo, a Texas longhorn has been the mascot for the University of Texas since 1916. • Burchett staff members who graduated from UT are: • Mrs. Harding • Ms. Appling HOOK ‘EM HORNS!!!

Texas A & M University • Texas A&M University is the oldest public university in Texas. • Texas A&M is located in College Station, Texas, which is about 90 miles northwest of Houston. • Texas A & M is recognized as Home of the 12th Man, where students stand during football games to show support for the team. • The team mascot for Texas A& M is the Aggie! • Burchett teachers who graduated from Texas A&M University are: • Mrs. McConnell • Ms. Flores • Ms. Riddle • Ms. Conner Gig ‘Em Aggies!
