  1. Constructing a Simple Garment • 1. Prepare your fabric ( preshrink if necessary) • 2. Straighten woven fabric if needed • 3. Prepare pattern pieces • 4. Layout pattern and pin to fabric with pins placed perpendicular to cutting line and arrows on pattern pieces placed parallel to selvage edges.

  2. 5. Cut fabric while pinned to pattern pieces keeping fabric on table.

  3. Constructing a Simple Garment 6. Transfer Pattern Markings: done on wrong side of fabric. Markings include circles, squares, lines. Markings should be transferred using tracing paper and tracing wheel.

  4. 7. Prepare Garment Pieces (Construct Garment) • Stitch and press seams • Stitch seams directionally with seam allowance. • Be sure to backstitch • Press seams open, done before seams are sewn together • Finish seams to keep them from raveling

  5. Construct Garment ( continued) • Apply facings. These are pieces of fabric cut the same shape as pieces of the garment • Apply additional construction techniques and finishing touches required by the pattern such as collars, sleeves, pockets, waistbands, zippers, or buttons.

  6. 8. Hem garment • Mark hem location • Turn hem up and lightly press fold of hem • Trim hem to desired length • Finish hem edge • Attach hem to garment
