  2. CRS in Haiti • 58 years of continuous presence in Haiti • 693 staff across 7 offices • 344 local partner organizations • 50 projects in all Haiti’s Provinces serving 423,000 direct participants and 2.9 million indirect beneficiaries • 65 million USD budget for fiscal year 2012

CRS approach • (1) Engaging communities in decision making/adjusting based on feedback • (2) Sustained collaboration/consultation with various GOH entities/compliance with GOH policies/mandates • (3) Building local capacity and partnership with community based organisations, Church, private sector • (4) Integrated programming /integration of DRR – given multiple risk factors

Agro business Planting Mango seedling ACHIEVEMENTS: The agro-enterprise and natural resource management program has increased food security and resiliency through demand-driven value chains and markets: Beans- increased production 230% Cassava- increased yields 10 to 30 tons/ha Mango- increased 225% MYAP Agriculture/Livelihoods CRS agriculture extension agents build on the Ministry of Agriculture to reduce post-harvest loss due to sweet potato weevils that can be responsible for 50-100% loss.

Access to education CRS’ Multi-Year Assistance Program (MYAP) reaches 45,000 students, 11,250 Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members, and 1,080 teachers in 135 primary schools in Southern Haiti. School Constructed by CRS & Caritas Cayes in Southern Haiti. CRS-supported schools have a dropout rate of 1.9% compared to the national average of 12%

Community Resettlement and Recovery Program • From June 2010: secondary phase of the earthquake response and transition • CRRP helps at least 25,000 families resettle in 5 communities of Port au Prince • Integrated shelter, water and sanitation, protection, community infrastructure, and livelihoods • Major funding: USAID/OFDA; CAFOD; Caritas Australia; ARC; CRS private resources

WASH INFRASTRUCTURES: • Constructed/rehabilitated 1706 latrines • 100 hand-washing stations /500 bathing structures • 6,257 meters of drainage SOLID WASTE: • 350 solid waste collection bins installed • 1,400 solid waste clean-up sessions • 1,005 meters of drainage canal drained and cleaned to improve flow during rain events CHOLERA RESPONSE AND HYGIENE: • Soap/aqua tabs distributed to 16,500 families • Hygiene promotion and cholera prevention activities for 29,000 families • 250 hygiene volunteers and WASHcommittees • 640 latrine monitors • 10,000 hygiene kit distributed

LIVELIHOODS Rubble 2 Reconstruction (R2R)–Uses rubble crushers to recycle rubble into marketable sand and gravel and vibrating block-making machines create consistent quality blocks for reconstruction. • Ti Biznis 2–600 participants 1) complete a 5-day business training, 2) are connected with banking and insurance sectors, 3) invest 500 USD grant to recapitalize their business, and 4) are supported for an additional 6 months to solidify good business practices. • Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC)–Groups of 15-25 self-selected individuals save small amounts of cash and lend it within their group to finance income-generating activities. • 230 groups/ Total savings of $109,728/ 2,789 loans disbursed • Trash for Cash–Creates recycling pre-collect centers with private partner Sustainable Recycling Solutions to provide immediate cash payments for plastic, incentivizing proper waste disposal. Trash for Cash entrepreneur is seen at work

Shelters, housing and CI • From shelters: • 8,560 T-shelters constructed with OFDA funds • 42,800 beneficiaries • To permanent relocations: • 100 Red house demolitions • 500 Yellow house rehabilitations • 100 Owner driven construction • Approach: • Empowerment and dignity • Choice and flexibility • Power transfer • Links response to recovery
